The RUSNANOPRIZE International Nanotechnology Prize Committee awarded the winners of the 2015 prize, in the field of nanotechnology, energy efficiency and green technologies which combine knowledge-based approach, highly demanded technological solutions, vast range of opportunities for nanotech application as well as global strategic influence on industries and every day life.

The official awarding ceremony of RUSNANOPRIZE 2015 was held in the framework of the "Open Innovation Forum" in Moscow, October 28, 2015. Winners of the international award RUSNANOPRIZE 2015 became Yury Gogotsi,  professor  of Drexel University (USA), Director of the Institute of nanomaterials Drexel University (USA), and professor of vthe University Paul Sabatier (France), Patrice Simon for the fundamental studies and development of carbon nanomaterials, for electrochemical capacitors and formulation of basic principles for matching sizes of pores and electrolyte ions, which found their successful commercialization in supercapacitors, ultracapacitors, edlc, electrochemical capacitor technologies and production. For the successful introduction of technology and commercialization of nanostructured carbon materials, as well as for the implementation of the principles developed by scientists in the mass production of supercapacitors Prize has been awarded the company Maxwell Technologies Inc. (USA).

Award Ceremony of RUSNANOPRIZE 2015 Laureats Yury Gogotsi, Distinguished University Professor and Trustee Chair at Drexel University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, Member of the Board of Materials Research Society, MRS and Patrice Simon, Professor in Materials Sciences at Paul Sabatier University, at Open Innovations Forum, Moscow, October 28, 2015

Award Ceremony of RUSNANOPRIZE 2015 Laureates Patrice Simon, Professor in Materials Sciences at Paul Sabatier University and Yury Gogotsi, Distinguished University Professor and Trustee Chair at Drexel University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, Member of the Board of Materials Research Society, MRS and  at Open Innovations Forum, Moscow, October 28, 2015

Yury Gogotsi, is Distinguished University Professor and Trustee Chair at Drexel University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Director of the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute, Member of the Board of Materials Research Society, MRS and Patrice Simon, Professor in Materials Sciences at Paul Sabatier University manages a network of 17 laboratories and 15 Companies of French Network on Electrochemical Energy Storage, which are working to develop a new generation of batteries and supercapacitors. Yury Gogotsi and Patrice Simon are world known scientists in the field of materials science, engineering and nanotechnologies for energy storage.

They developed and obtained nanostructured carbon materials, including carbide-derived carbon (CDC), with controlled parameters and pore sizes from 1 to 10 nm, and studied its properties to adsorb ions in the electrodes of supercapacitors. High electric conductivity and electrochemical stability allows these nanostructured materials to be effectively implemented in electrical energy storage.  This research results help to improove the characteristics and performance of electrochemical supercapacitors and their further commercialization in energy related applications. The special value of Y. Gogotsi’s and P. Simon’s joint research work consisted in the outcome of commercialization, because the capacitors got a seriously competitive advantage in the market of energy storage devices. These studies have allowed to make a real breakthrough in the field of energy storage, provide an incentive to the formation and furthure development of the market of supercapacitors which volume at the end of 2014 is estimated at $ 1 billion, with a projected volume of $ 3.5 billion in 2020 (according to Market Research Media Report, 2014).

A world leader in the production of supercapacitors Maxwell Technologies Inc. was the first company that achieved outstanding success in the commercialization of the properties of nanostructured carbon materials. Maxwell Technologies has launched mass production of supercapacitors for automotive, renewable energy, backup power, wireless communications and industrial and consumer electronics applications.
